A Piece of American History

A treasure of American history tracing back to the time of the original settlers in Bolinas, California, this 65-acre agrarian sanctuary transports us back to a time of more stillness and connection to the land, those we love, and ourselves.

The Hideaway has long captivated the world. The property was a site of photographic interest for Ansel Adams in the 1930s (one of the pictures he took there was featured in a traveling Smithsonian exhibition, Left). It later became the hallowed grounds for businessman and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival founder Warren Hellman. Today, the Hideaway is being sold by the leading photographer of our time, Annie Leibovitz.

Agricultural Land

Located in an agricultural zone in the cradle of West Marin’s sustainable farmland, possibilities abound for plentiful and sustainable food production. The recent addition of stone planting terraces with new drainage and irrigation adds to the aesthetic and agricultural magic of The Hideaway.

Equestrian Paradise

For people with a passion for equestrian life, look no further. A high end equestrian facility features a sprawling 100' x 200' year-around riding arena ideal for training and a high-end 7-stall horse barn with offices. A myriad of additional horse and livestock stalls and pastures decorate the expansive property.

Inviting Living Quarters

The Hideaway’s recently updated four residential structures serve as an ideal family compound with seven bedrooms. The 1920’s four-bedroom home features an elegant kitchen and a light filled floor plan — the perfect retreat after a full-day exploring the serene and scenic property, surfing at one of the nearby beaches, working in the garden, or creating music at the on-property recording studio. Immediately adjacent are two more structures: a charming guest cottage with soaring ceilings as well as a workshop ideal for projects and creative expression. Completing the residential compound is a two-bedroom caretaker’s residence. The nearby expansive hay and dairy barns have been transformed into an ideal venue for special occasions and events with a performance stage, banquet hall and home to Hellman’s famed recording studio.

STEEPED IN NATURE

The Hideaway offers an unparalleled playground for outdoor enthusiasts and admirers of coastal beauty. The nearby Bolinas Lagoon preserve, one of the few remaining unscathed estuaries on the west coast, is a sanctuary for Herons and Egrets, tens of thousands of migratory birds, harbor seals and a host of marine life. Enjoy sensational sunrises and tranquil sunsets reflecting off of the shimmering lagoon from private vista points at The Hideaway. You won’t tire of the neighboring world-class hiking through the Point Reyes National Seashore, the lush Bob Stewart Trail and Mount Tamalpais. Don’t forget about the wonderful California surfing (some of the best in the Bay Area), kayaking, fishing, and tide pool viewing all of which is nearby. The charming seaside towns of Bolinas and Stinson Beach are a quick bike ride or drive away.
